Our History

Prior to June 2004 the Board of Management for the Algoma District Homes for the Aged operated the 184 bed F.J. Davey Home on property directly west of the current Home.  This home was a municipal home for the aged and was financially supported by the City of Sault Ste. Marie and other municipalities throughout the District of Algoma.  The organization has a long history dating back to 1914 when it was founded as a House of Refuge.  Many organizational and physical plant changes took place over the intervening years until in 1998, through it’s building classification process, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) determined that the building which housed the residents was not suitable on a go forward basis and that it would have to undergo extensive renovation or rebuild.

The Board of Management in conjunction with the MOHLTC and the City of Sault Ste. Marie developed a plan whereby through financial contribution and governance reorganization a new home would be built which would exceed the design standards set by the Ministry and would provide services to a greater number citizens.

Today the F.J. Davey Home is a charitable not for profit nursing home located in the City of Sault Ste. Marie and operated by a volunteer Board of Directors as a private corporation.  The founding and current Board members and officers are:

      Michael Sanzosti, President & Chairperson
      Evelyn Theriault
      Linda Schraeder
      Lou Turco
      Anne Gregory
      Peter MacLean, Secretary
      Karen Mascardelli, Treasurer

The Home offers 374 long-term care beds serving primarily residents of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding area.  Through its extensive history, the management and staff of the Home have continued to strive for a high level of excellence in long-term care.

In addition to operating the nursing home, the Board of Directors contracts with the MOHLTC to provide Community Support Programs including the Meals on Wheels Program and the Adult Day Away Program.
